Her Story

About Samantha

Samantha Burns serves as Assistant Vice President and Underwriting Manager for Primary Casualty Insurance at Zurich, leading the West Coast division. She began her career after a recommendation from her mother for a receptionist role at an insurance carrier. Over 11 years in excess and surplus lines and specialty insurance, she progressed from underwriting support to a full underwriting role with her own book of business, then into leadership by building a renewal team at a Berkeley company with a direct-to-retail model before joining Zurich. Burns holds a marketing and communication degree from ASU after starting in accounting at Mesa Community College. She is property and casualty licensed in Arizona and California with a surplus lines license. She participates in WSAA and previously in an under-40 organization for young professionals in insurance and surplus lines. Burns attributes her drive to becoming a role model for her children after having her daughter, aiming to provide them a good life while balancing career and family. She values honesty, transparency, trust, and loyalty in both professional and personal spheres.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Samantha

01What do you attribute your success to?

After having my daughter, I wanted to be someone she's proud of and provide a good life for my kids. My children are my driver for success.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I cannot expect others to put in the same amount of effort that I will, otherwise I will be constantly disappointed. Everyone has a different role on the team.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't take anything personally. Prioritize your family just as much as your work. You can have both a successful career and be a present mom. Work and home life blend together.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The market is softening, so we have to adapt. Being at a company that is open to adapting to the ever-changing market is key. As the economy shifts, there is impact on the insurance industry.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty and transparency are most important, especially as a leader. Trust and loyalty come second. These values help build connections in work and personal life.
