Her Story

About Samantha

Samantha Koch works in environmental engineering with a focus on green infrastructure. She earned a civil engineering degree after initially pursuing mathematics and finance but seeking greater impact. Her interest grew through an environmental chemistry class and learning about sustainable urban changes such as trees in road medians. She attributes much of her success to her parents and support system as well as motivation from being in a male-dominated field and a desire for more than basic necessities. Koch values accountability, responsibility, and honesty above all. She advises being open to every opportunity in business interactions and encourages young women entering the field to be a sponge, learning everything possible. Current challenges she notes include public disconnect on sustainability needs, reluctance to invest in sustainable options, and political shifts affecting regulations and job security. A key mentor is Raven, a structural engineer and former internship boss known for her engagement and expertise.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Samantha

01What do you attribute your success to?

I definitely attribute a lot of my success to my parents, my support system, they are amazing. Being in a male-dominated field has motivated me to work harder. I just always wanted things, and I didn't grow up with extra, but I want those extra things.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Every interaction in business is the opportunity. Whether it's to learn from someone else's experience, or it's networking, or it could be a job opportunity, it could be an advancement opportunity, anything, but every interaction is important.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Just be a sponge. I want to figure it out. I want to learn it all. Be open to anything, any which way.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The disconnect between the technical side of why we need more sustainable projects and the public not knowing specifics. Companies and people don't want to spend more money on sustainable things. Political changes every 4 years that gut environmental regulations and affect job security.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Taking accountability and responsibility and honesty. Those are absolutely the most important.
