Ten minutes with Samantha
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to both my mentors and my lived experience. My mentors have supported me through challenges and successes alike, and I’ve been able to trust and lean on them for guidance. They’ve helped me learn how to recognize when it’s time to take the next opportunity—whether that means advancing in my career, taking on new responsibilities, or taking a risk even if I might be wrong. It’s important to know your worth and continue striving for what you’ve earned and deserve.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
“Throw spaghetti at the wall.” Set a goal, but understand that there are many ways to achieve it. Try the tactic you believe will work, and if it doesn’t stick, that’s okay. Don’t be afraid to trust your instincts, experiment, and have fun with the process.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
In nonprofit communications and marketing, always keep learning. Learn a little about a lot of things. Being well-rounded and knowledgeable helps you adapt and grow in a constantly changing field. Become an expert in your area, but never stop absorbing new ideas and perspectives.
Also, don’t just identify problems—come with solutions. It’s important to recognize challenges, but even more valuable to help move things forward.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The field is constantly evolving. There’s always a new platform, new AI tools, or a new algorithm changing how we connect with people. The key is to grow with it—stay curious, be open to change, and trust your instincts as you adapt.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Creativity and empathy are two values that guide both my work and personal life. I enjoy finding creative ways to reach goals and connect with people. At the same time, it’s important to remember that we’re working with other humans. Care personally and challenge directly.
