Her Story

About Samantha

Samantha Morrell operates her own cleaning services business as a solo entrepreneur. She started the business to demonstrate to her children that it is possible to succeed independently without relying on others. Having faced significant personal challenges including addiction and three periods of incarceration, Morrell achieved sobriety prior to the birth of her youngest child and has maintained it for six years. She credits her children as the primary motivation for her transformation and entrepreneurial efforts. Morrell also highlights the guidance of her treatment counselor, Shannon Huber, who consistently affirmed her strength and self-sufficiency. In advising others, she recommends that young women entering the industry partner with someone for safety and support, emphasizing that hard work leads to opportunities.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Samantha

01What do you attribute your success to?

My kids. I wasn't there for my oldest in the beginning of her life because of my addiction, and that really killed me. I went to prison three times before I finally got my shit together. Then I had my youngest, got sober before her, and I've been sober since. Both my kids are everything to me. I wanted to show them that you don't have to rely on some man to take care of you or to be anybody or make you feel like you're something. I started my own business to show them that you can do it on your own, be your own woman, be independent.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I'm a strong and capable woman. I've always relied on somebody else or a man to take care of me or make me feel wanted or important. My counselor Shannon always told me how strong I am for everything I've gone through, that I don't need a man to make me feel important and whole, that I can do this, and she's proud of me.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

If you want to do it, do it with somebody else so that you don't get attacked, so that you have a backup or something in there with you. This shit's hard to do, it's hard to start on your own, but if I can do it, man, anybody can, honestly, as long as you're a hard worker, people will hire you.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

My background, people don't want to hire me or rent to me because of everything in my past. They don't want to give me a chance or see that I'm a very hard worker and good at what I do.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty, trust, Being loyal and faithful. Strong and independent, motivation.
