Her Story

About Samantha

Samantha X serves as a Senior Associate at Cushman, specializing in office leasing on the landlord side of commercial real estate in New York City. She entered the field in June 2022 following her graduation from the University of Michigan Stephen Ross School of Business, where exposure to real estate development sparked her interest. Her first role after college was at Cushman, and she has remained dedicated to commercial real estate, particularly helping to lead office leasing efforts with her team. Samantha finds that no two days are alike, often involving property tours, marketing spaces, internal work, and canvassing to attract brokers. She attributes her professional success to the supportive network of friends and mentors in the industry who have trained and guided her, along with her commitment to showing up consistently. Among the values she holds most important are honesty, communication, hard work, and motivation. Samantha advises taking one's work seriously while maintaining perspective and encourages young women to enter the field despite fewer female peers, noting the unique niche and influence women can have. She sees significant opportunity in New York's post-COVID market, where vacancy allows for repositioning buildings to better serve tenants, while acknowledging the challenge of maintaining consistency in an eat-what-you-kill brokerage environment.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Samantha

01What do you attribute your success to?

I've been surrounded by really good friends in the industry and made great connections. Showing up every day and having people around me who trained and taught me has been key to getting where I am today.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've received is to take what you do seriously, but don't take yourself too seriously. I've lived by that ever since and it's been a great change.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

There aren't too many women in the industry, but I wouldn't let that deter anybody from breaking into it. We have a lot of power because there's so many men, and there's a little niche for us. It would be great to have more people feel comfortable to join and be a part of it.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is that brokerage is very eat what you kill, so keeping consistent with canvassing and cold calling without getting discouraged by hearing no. The greatest opportunity is New York coming off COVID with lots of vacancy; on the landlord side it's exciting to close the gap, reposition buildings, and improve them for tenants.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty is my big one, along with communication, hard work, and motivation.
