Her Story

About Samira

Samira Sumbundu serves as a counselor at the Snohomish County Prosecutor's Office. In this role, she manages a caseload of approximately 22 clients who are felony defendants participating in deferred prosecution. She supports them through three-year contracts that address underlying issues such as mental health and substance use disorders by connecting them to appropriate resources and services. Prior to her current position, Sumbundu worked in Mental Health Court supporting misdemeanor defendants with severe mental illnesses including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar disorder as an alternative to incarceration. Her path into human services began in 2024 after six years as a scientist in the biopharmaceutical and biotech industry. She first served as a mental health coordinator and then obtained her substance use disorder counselor license while working at a recovery center, where she observed the prevalence of criminal justice involvement among clients. Sumbundu holds a Master of Science in Human Services, which she completed on May 9, 2026. She maintains a substance use disorder counselor license and participates in ongoing trainings on topics including de-escalation, new mental health disorders, and overdose awareness with Narcan administration.

She briefly volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate and is now trained as a Title 26 Guardian Ad Litem looking to further serve Snohomish County residents.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Samira

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think it's a combination of my love for my society. I think it's my willingness to give back, and I think it's the impact that I'm able to make, the opportunity to make an impact. Those are the things that drive me.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is to be a sponge, to be willing to learn in any room that I walk into. I try to actively incorporate that in everything that I do, knowing when it's my turn to speak, knowing when it's my turn to listen.
