Her Story
About Sanchita
Sanchita Bhat serves as research faculty in biomedical engineering, a role she has held for two and a half years. With a background that began in electronics, she transitioned into the field through academic lab work on cardiovascular devices before pursuing her PhD. She earned her master's degree at Penn State in 2017 and her PhD at Georgia Tech in 2023. Her research centers on the development of cardiovascular devices for underserved populations, including pediatric patients and the neonatal fetal population, with an emphasis on minimally invasive options that are accessible and sustainable. Sanchita attributes her success to opportunities provided by her PIs and bosses, which enabled collaborations with universities and physicians across the country and internationally. She has been recognized with the best presentation award from the Additional Ventures Research Fund in 2022 and the best project award from the American College of Cardiology Georgia chapter in 2023. She values integrity and honesty in scientific collaboration and advises aspiring professionals, especially women, to find their passions and persist toward their goals.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the opportunities I was given by my PIs and bosses who are pioneers in the field, allowing collaborations with many people, universities, and physicians across the country and other countries.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best compliment I received was 'You are showing us how the impossible can be made possible.' It was scary to receive at the time as a PhD student but helped motivate me greatly.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Just keep going. Find your passions and put your head down and focus on your goal. Women can do anything men can do.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Biggest challenge is finding the right people who are passionate about specific diseases and devices. Biggest opportunity is developing minimally invasive devices that don't require open-heart surgery, making them accessible, sustainable, and affordable.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity and honesty, especially when collaborating and sharing criticism of scientific thoughts.
