Ten minutes with Sandra

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to not being afraid to get involved. I volunteer for a lot of things and am not afraid to learn new things. I like to be engaged and busy, ask a lot of questions, and learn as much as I can to stay engaged.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say be your authentic self and trust your background.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges include budget cuts in the college and university sector, declining student population numbers compared to 5-10 years ago leading to increased competition for students, and stress on hiring and filling positions. Opportunities exist if you are willing to grow in content knowledge, starting in positions and working your way into others.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Respect for other people is huge to me, respecting people's positions regardless of what they're doing, and that everybody deserves equal respect. I also value being respectful of everybody's time and space, supporting people to do what they want to do and follow their dreams, and encouraging them.
