Sandra James is the founder and CEO of Private Eyes Screening Group, a company she has built and led for more than 27 years in the background screening and information services industry. With nearly four decades of experience in information gathering, James has established herself as a trusted leader in helping organizations make informed hiring decisions through accurate, efficient, and cost-effective screening solutions. Under her leadership, Private Eyes has developed proprietary software for information verification and expanded its services to include pre-employment background checks, drug testing, physicals, health screenings, and income verification for clients across the United States and globally. James is recognized for her entrepreneurial resilience and commitment to building a sustainable, values-driven organization. She takes great pride in creating a debt-free, profitable company that has never missed a payroll, reflecting her dedication to financial responsibility, accountability, and strong leadership. Beyond her executive role, she remains actively involved in strategic growth initiatives, technology development, and select client partnerships while empowering her leadership team to manage daily operations. She is also engaged with professional organizations including Women's Business Enterprise National Council, serving as a previous board member and advocate for women entrepreneurs and business leaders. In 2024, James became a bestselling author with her book, Don't Tell Me I Can't: The Journey of a Farm Girl to CEO, which shares her inspiring journey from a farm girl to a successful CEO and highlights the challenges, perseverance, and determination that shaped her career. 01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my resilience, persistence, and courage. Throughout my journey, I have remained committed to overcoming challenges, learning from setbacks, and continuing to move forward. My determination and refusal to give up have been key factors in achieving my goals and building lasting success.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have ever received is that everything is a negotiation. This perspective has taught me the importance of understanding different viewpoints, communicating effectively, and recognizing opportunities to create mutually beneficial outcomes. It has helped me approach challenges with confidence, advocate for my goals, and build stronger professional relationships.

My advice to young women entering this industry is to lead with passion, commitment, and a willingness to make sacrifices. Success requires dedication, perseverance, and the ability to stay focused on making a meaningful impact. If you truly believe in the work you are doing and are prepared to invest the time and effort it takes, you can create a lasting difference and build a rewarding career.
