Her Interview

Ten minutes with Sandra

01What do you attribute your success to?

I tell individuals to be ready. You don't always have to be completely ready, but be open and receptive to opportunities to learn and grow. We don't all have to be experts, expertise matters, but it's that curiosity, the willingness to collaborate with people who are from different functions. Oftentimes just be ready, be open.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I tell my own children this, just to be ready. You don't always have to be completely ready, but be open and receptive to opportunities to learn and grow. We don't all have to be experts, you know, expertise matters, but it's that curiosity, the willingness to collaborate with people who are from different functions. Oftentimes, you know, just be ready, be open.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Collaboration matters. Anybody can be a leader, it's not I see leadership as title agnostic. You know, if there's confidence. If you make people feel valued, and you listen. Those opportunities will come.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges include early phase commercialization where products in clinical trials may be discontinued if another works better, leading to program cancellations. Opportunities exist to work on drugs that change people's lives, with excitement when data comes out and messaging is developed for patients and doctors. In rare disease, everyone works together rather than competing.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Resilience. Integrity, for sure. A lot of empathy. I think you need a lot of empathy in biotech. It's not just about hitting sales numbers. Empathy is huge, authenticity. Definitely integrity. And understanding that everything that we do has a purpose. We work for patients.
