I have over 20 years in healthcare. After losing everything when the company I helped build went bankrupt, I decided to start my own insurance business, VMAX Insurance, three years ago. We focus on providing the best health coverage especially for the Hispanic community across 19 states.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
A mentor told me years ago: Sandra, you're thinking too little. The sky is the limit. That really resonated because sometimes we get a vision funnel into what we're doing every day without expanding our vision.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Educate yourself to really understand the business and the industry. Find good mentors who are willing to provide guidance. This is a wonderful industry with tons of opportunities nationwide and even international, where you can make a great impact by touching patients' lives and providing peace of mind.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Biggest challenge at the beginning was finding funding because banks don't provide it when you're too early, and you don't qualify for SBA, so had to use own 401K and savings. Also, transitioning from medical field to insurance and figuring out contracting, payments, commissions, and systems on my own.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Do good without looking back. Our core is our patients and their experience with our insurance brokers, always selecting the best health coverage. Bringing peace of mind to clients and families that they have the correct coverage when they need to go to a hospital.
