Ten minutes with Sandy

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to perseverance, lifelong learning, and a genuine passion for improving healthcare through research, education, and leadership. I believe that meaningful impact comes from combining knowledge with integrity, collaboration, and a commitment to serving others. Throughout my career, I have embraced every opportunity to grow, mentor students, contribute to clinical research, and continuously expand my expertise. I view challenges as opportunities to learn, adapt, and become a stronger leader, and I remain committed to making a positive difference in healthcare and higher education.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is to never stop learning and to always let integrity guide every decision. Skills and technologies will continue to evolve, but a strong work ethic, ethical leadership, and a commitment to continuous growth are what build lasting credibility and meaningful impact. I have carried that advice throughout my career by embracing new opportunities, seeking knowledge, and striving to make a positive difference through research, education, and healthcare leadership.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

To young women entering healthcare, clinical research, or higher education, I would encourage you to believe in your abilities, remain curious, and never stop learning. Build a strong foundation of knowledge, seek mentors who will challenge and support you, and do not be afraid to pursue leadership opportunities. Your voice, ideas, and perspective have value, and confidence grows through experience and perseverance. Most importantly, lead with integrity, treat others with respect, and remember that meaningful success is measured not only by personal achievements but also by the positive impact you have on the lives of others.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest opportunities in healthcare today is the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies, which have the potential to improve clinical decision-making, expand access to care, enhance operational efficiency, and support more personalized patient care. At the same time, these innovations present important challenges, including ensuring ethical implementation, protecting patient privacy, reducing algorithmic bias, maintaining regulatory compliance, and preparing the healthcare workforce to use these technologies effectively. Successfully balancing innovation with patient safety, equity, and evidence-based practice will be essential to shaping the future of healthcare.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity, compassion, lifelong learning, and service are the values that guide both my professional and personal life. I believe in leading with honesty, treating others with respect, and approaching every opportunity with humility and a commitment to excellence. I value collaboration, resilience, and continuous growth, recognizing that meaningful success is built through hard work, ethical leadership, and a willingness to learn from every experience. Above all, I strive to make a positive and lasting impact by serving others, advancing healthcare, and empowering the next generation of professionals.
