About Sandy
Sandy Volinski serves as Senior Project Manager and Project Director at UnitedHealthcare, where she has worked for over 25 years. In this capacity, she manages multiple projects of varying durations and scales, from short-term initiatives to multi-year efforts involving significant investments, primarily focused on the Medicare retiree population. These projects encompass system onboarding, technical integrations, compliance with government requirements, and improvements to communication channels. Prior to her project management role, she worked in operations and call center environments for several years, where her organizational and leadership skills led to her being selected to lead projects more than 20 years ago. She obtained her PMP certification and has since built a career centered on leading cross-functional teams as a business partner rather than a formal people manager. Sandy also participates in mentorship programs both within and outside her organization, guiding others in their professional development.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
One of the things I find most important in project management is understanding what the projects are setting out to do. There are a lot of project managers who have the skills necessary to run projects and do all the right things like facilitate meetings and follow project schedules, but what makes excellent project managers is really digging in to understand what's going on at a decent level so you can ask better questions and get people to think a little bit deeper.
