Sangita Lama
I am originally from Nepal, where I worked as a Conservation Officer with the Government of Nepal’s Ministry of Forest and Environment. After moving to the United States in 2017, I explored new career opportunities and became increasingly interested in the growing role of data and technology in solving real-world problems.
The COVID-19 pandemic was a major turning point for me. Seeing how critical data, information, and health technology became during that time inspired me to pursue a master’s degree in data science with an interest in health informatics. I wanted to better understand how data and technology could support decision-making, particularly in healthcare.
After completing my degree, I started my career in business and data analysis in the healthcare industry as a Business Systems/Data Analyst, working with healthcare data. Later, I transitioned to the telecommunications industry by joining Charter Communications to expand my knowledge across different business domains. This role gave me exposure to telecommunications, advertising, marketing, and enterprise data systems.
Currently, I work as a Business Analyst, serving as a bridge between business stakeholders and technical teams. I gather and refine business requirements, translate business needs into technical solutions, collaborate with developers and solution architects, and ensure projects align with business goals. Over the past 7–8 years, I have built experience in turning business needs into data-driven solutions, regardless of the industry.

What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to dedication, passion, and a willingness to continuously learn and adapt. I have always been committed to my career and personal goals, even when it meant stepping outside my comfort zone and starting over in a completely new field. I believe that when you are genuinely passionate about what you do and stay dedicated to your goals, challenges become opportunities for growth. My journey has taught me that with persistence, hard work, and a clear sense of purpose, success is achievable. If you truly believe in what you want to accomplish and stay committed, you can make it happen.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have received is to keep learning, keep moving forward, and continuously adapt to change. In a business and data-driven field, technology and industry standards evolve rapidly, so it is important to stay updated with emerging tools, technologies, and business trends. That advice has stayed with me throughout my career—always be curious, continue building your knowledge, and never stop growing. I believe staying adaptable and open to learning is one of the keys to long-term success.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this field is to believe in your potential and stay committed to your goals, regardless of your background or where you come from. Be passionate about what you do, stay dedicated, and keep moving forward even when the path feels uncertain.
I have personally navigated significant career transitions—changing industries, roles, and domains—and each step has strengthened my confidence and capabilities. It wasn’t always easy, but staying consistent and open to learning helped me grow and succeed.
I want to encourage other women that if you are willing to put in the effort and truly believe in your goals, you can achieve them. I am living proof of that journey, and I believe others can do it too.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest opportunities in my field today is the rapid advancement of AI-driven technologies, including large language models and automation tools. These innovations are significantly improving efficiency, enabling faster analysis, and helping professionals learn and adapt to new tools and ways of working.
At the same time, there are important challenges that come with this transformation. While AI enhances productivity, it also introduces risks that need to be carefully managed—particularly around data security, privacy, and responsible information sharing. It is essential to balance the benefits of AI with a strong focus on governance, risk assessment, and ethical use of data.
Overall, AI is reshaping the way we work, creating both exciting opportunities for innovation and the responsibility to use these tools thoughtfully and securely.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are integrity, continuous learning, and adaptability.
Integrity is important because I believe in being honest, accountable, and reliable in my work. Continuous learning has shaped my career journey as I’ve transitioned across different fields and always stayed open to new knowledge. Adaptability is also key, as my career path has involved moving across industries and roles, and learning to adjust quickly has helped me grow.
I also value collaboration and respect, because success in any role comes from working well with others and supporting shared goals.
