Her Story

About Sara

My professional journey has been one of transformation and resilience. I worked in corporate for around 10 years, starting at a very young age, and had the privilege of working for two multinational companies, Unilever and DHL Express. I have a master's degree in business administration with specialization in supply chain and marketing. When I came to the United States after getting married, COVID happened, and I had my baby boy during the pandemic. I also lost my mother-in-law to cancer during that time. My son was later diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, which led me to discover special education. I got an opportunity to work as a substitute teacher to know the people and the systems, and that's when I had exposure to special education in schools. Now I'm a teacher and mentor for youth, including high school, middle school, and elementary kids. I'm trying to impart my experience, my education and learning to people, to give them support as a community. I believe young people need direction, and people like us who belong to this kind of background need to be connected with them to give them exposure and help them plan what they want to aspire to in life. While I still feel I would prefer to go back to a corporate setup when I get the chance, right now my commitment with my son is a priority, though I still interact with people whenever I get an opportunity online or in person.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to being the product of my own struggles and making a brand out of myself. You are a brand yourself - it depends if you have the knack to market yourself. My greatest achievement is that I have achieved my education, my skills that I have today, the confidence that I have to overpower a big global change moving from one country to another. It's all my hard work and self-achievement, all by myself.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Keep working consistently towards your goals, and you will reach the part where you want. Sometimes there will be delays, there will be problems, or sometime your paths may change. But it's okay. The acceptance is the best answer to every situation because you are not in control. You give your best, but you're not in control. When you accept that, life becomes easy. The path becomes easy.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The young generation today has different mindsets and different ideas. They have a lot to say, and they need direction. I think people like us, who belong to this kind of background, we need to be connected with them. This will give them an exposure, or at least a heads up that where they can plan and choose whatever they want to aspire ahead in life.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I believe that if you're a positive-minded person and you feel for others, you are able to do much better in life because you have a good kind of hope for everybody. You think humanly for everyone. This is very important. When you give more to people from you, it comes back naturally to you. Everything is not for money - there's a lot more for the people in the world. Nothing remains permanent without a change, and change itself gives you a lot of exposure and obstacles, but it's up to you how you deal with them.
