Her Story

About Sara

Dr. Sara Combs is a licensed acupuncturist, Doctor of Oriental Medicine, and owner of Milford Traditional Acupuncture in Milford, Ohio. Her path into the profession began through a deeply personal experience. Following the loss of her father, Sara developed severe, unexplained health symptoms, including a debilitating migraine that lasted for four months. After exhausting traditional medical options without relief, she decided to try acupuncture. Within minutes of her first treatment, the headache disappeared. That transformative moment inspired her to pursue a new career dedicated to helping others find healing through natural, holistic medicine. Determined to understand the practice that changed her life, Sara returned to school in her 30s and spent years building her expertise. She earned a bachelor's degree in Health Science, a master's degree in Oriental Medicine, and a doctorate in Oriental Medicine, completing extensive training in acupuncture and herbal medicine. After becoming board certified through the National Certification Board for Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine, she launched a successful practice in Tennessee, where she spent several years helping patients improve their health and quality of life. In 2024, she returned to her hometown of Milford, Ohio, to open Milford Traditional Acupuncture and continue serving her community. Today, Sara specializes in whole-person care, focusing on the connection between body, mind, and spirit. She is particularly passionate about supporting veterans and women's health, including fertility, pain management, and wellness concerns, drawing on both professional expertise and personal connections to those communities. A member of the Ohio Acupuncture Association, Sara is committed to expanding awareness of acupuncture as a natural, non-pharmaceutical healthcare option. Beyond patient care, she is passionate about mentorship, education, and preserving traditional healing practices for future generations.

Ten minutes with Sara

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my personal experience as a patient, which inspired me to pursue a new career path. The encouragement and guidance I received from a practitioner who became a mentor played a significant role in my journey. Choosing to retrain in my 30s required dedication and perseverance, and building my practice took consistent effort. Above all, my desire to help others has been the driving force behind my success.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice is to pace yourself throughout your training and focus on progressing one semester at a time. Take every opportunity to learn and absorb as much knowledge as possible while you are in school. Seek out mentors and build strong professional relationships, as these connections can provide valuable guidance and support. I also encourage you to start thinking early about potential areas of specialization and the types of patients you are most passionate about serving.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the greatest opportunities in my field is the ability to provide natural, non-opioid options for pain management, particularly in the context of the ongoing opioid crisis. At the same time, there is an important challenge and opportunity in increasing awareness and understanding of acupuncture and herbal medicine. Continuing to educate the public, promote the value of these treatments, and pass on knowledge through teaching and mentorship are essential for the future of the profession.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide me most are whole-person care, community service, and education. I believe in addressing the needs of the body, mind, and spirit while offering natural approaches to health and wellness. I am also committed to serving my community, particularly veterans and women, and I value mentorship as a way to support the next generation of practitioners and contribute to the growth of the field.
