About Sara

Sara Evans serves as Associate Professor at Kennesaw State University in Marietta, Georgia. In this role since 2019, she teaches sociology and criminal justice classes, with a primary focus on research methods. Her research interests lie in high-impact practices, which encompass study abroad programs, learning communities, and undergraduate research opportunities that extend beyond traditional classroom settings. Evans earned her PhD from the University of Georgia, her master's degree from Georgia Southern University, and her undergraduate degree from Emory University, all in the field of sociology with an emphasis on criminology or criminal justice. She is a member of the American Society of Criminology and was recognized with an award from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences for her innovative contributions to education in criminal justice. Outside of her academic work, Evans has volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters and advocates for disability rights through the National Down Syndrome Society and a local Atlanta association.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think I would attribute it to working hard, but also having a lot of good opportunities, and having the privilege, honestly, the privileges and the ability to take advantage of those opportunities.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I think that I would suggest that they make sure to find time for themselves, and to not get lost in the pressure of starting a career like this. There can be a lot of intense pressure at the very beginning of your career, and I would suggest that it would be beneficial to you in the long term to take a breath and find a way to develop some practices that help support you early in the process.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Artificial intelligence is a real challenge facing us right now.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty, transparency, and gratitude, really trying to show up with gratitude.
