Her Story

About Sara

I've been in technology for over 20 years, moving through different roles within IT. I started my career as a developer, which gave me the technical background to understand terminology, networking, and the environment. But I realized I wasn't as strong as I needed to be as a developer, so I moved into something I was naturally better at - organization and moving things forward. That developer background helped me develop into who I am today. Currently, I'm a senior project manager in the Global Fi organization at Worldwide Technology, where I'm leading what's really more of a program role, managing a data center refresh project with a large bank. I manage the entire scope, schedule, risk, actions, issues, and decisions, working with leadership and running governance to ensure our project is successful and smooth, within time and cost constraints. Prior to this, I was doing a data center build with a large bank. During my time at AT&T, I was recognized by Steve Jobs for participating in moving forward the iPad launch - I was awarded something that Steve Jobs had signed, which I'd say was one of my highlights. Around that time, there was a lot of readiness within the stores for launching products, and holiday readiness was a big initiative I was part of. I led a lot of that effort from a production support standpoint, making sure we were ready to accept orders 24-7, that all systems were ready to go for things like Black Friday and the holidays when people would start using their devices.

Ten minutes with Sara

01What do you attribute your success to?

I believe a lot of my success is based on hard work and drive, but I've also had many advocates that would recommend me for a role or pull me into another area which led to growth.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

You own your career

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would encourage her. I would definitely tell her to know that she's able, and she is worthy, and that she doesn't need to try to necessarily prove herself. When it comes to a man, they naturally tend to say 'I can do this' - if they only meet the requirements 90%, they're positive they can do it, and they move forward. Women have a hesitancy that is, you know, in terms of job applications, if they don't meet the requirements 100%, they're afraid to go apply. So I would just tell her, be confident, you can do it, you have the ability. There's nothing holding you back besides yourself.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I feel there is a lot of paperwork. I look forward to continuing to do more with AI.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My family is most important to me. The work will still be there, but life is short.
