Her Story

About Sara

Sara Rush serves as Director of PR and Communications for Portillo's, where she has worked for the past six years. Her career in hospitality began in 2010 after she shifted from pre-law studies in college to pursuing a professional certificate at culinary school. She gained foundational experience at the research firm Technomic, analyzing industry trends, consumer behavior, and innovation, before transitioning to media roles that covered restaurant brands through conferences, magazines, and digital publications. At Portillo's, Rush manages brand communications across multiple audiences, including leadership speeches, PR pitching, operational initiatives, and creative campaigns. Notable achievements include leading communications during the company's public offering amid the pandemic and activating a food truck in Times Square, as well as a rapid-response campaign naming a sandwich after Pope Leo. She has also brokered Portillo's partnership with No Kid Hungry, directing proceeds from annual Valentine's Day heart-shaped cake sales to the cause.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Sara

01What do you attribute your success to?

I work really hard. I've stepped outside my comfort zone quite a bit. And that's when a lot of the growth happens, when you're uncomfortable. And then I've had some really great leaders who have encouraged me to do that.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Be curious, not judgmental.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't be afraid to ask for a seat at the table. Not being afraid to present as a strong woman with facts and with opinions that bring value. And then you can show why you deserve that seat at the table.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Really understanding consumers and leveraging data. In the speed that everything is happening... To not take a beat and really understand the what and the why. That's where mistakes happen. The biggest challenge is really feeling the need to keep up speedwise and sacrificing quality as a result.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Making sure you're aligned with your core values is a value in itself. Greatness is the big one that drove me to Portillo's. I like to surround myself with people who strive for greatness. Energy is another big one. Compassion.
