Her Story

About Sarah

My career journey has been diverse and shaped by both passion and life circumstances. I originally wanted to pursue advertising, marketing, and public relations, and attended Johnson & Wales my first year of college. However, when my grandma passed away, I had a family situation and kind of lost interest at that point. I went on to work several cashiering jobs, hostess and waitress positions, and even did some painting and learned basic building maintenance skills like plumbing and electrical work. I signed with Crossmark in 2020, then stopped working for them after COVID started and became an assistant manager at Dollar Tree. I got hired back with Crossmark in November 2024, and I've been working as an Event Specialist for almost 2 years now. In my role, I gather up my demo cart with all the supplies I need for the day, including serving trays, induction burners, frying pans, and bottled water for cooking. I help members try the products I'm serving. I believe in going above and beyond the call of duty. At Dollar Tree, I once helped a customer find vases for a wedding when something was wrong with their shipment, and it was like finding a needle in a haystack, but that lady really thoroughly appreciated it. Just last week at Crossmark, I served peaches even though I'm not a real big peach fan, and a woman came back Monday, found me, and said I did a really good job and the peaches were so juicy she came back and bought more. Nobody's ever approached me saying something like that before, and that just made me feel really good.

Ten minutes with Sarah

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my daughter. She's my world, and she's definitely been my driving force. Everything I do, I do for her.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is to think positive, and positive things will happen. That mindset has really helped me navigate challenges and keep moving forward in my career.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

A good first job would definitely be a cashiering job anywhere. It gives you experience dealing with the public and dealing with all kinds of situations, because questions can just come be off the wall from customers. Definitely going above and beyond the call of duty is a good thing to do and have. For example, at Dollar Tree, I was helping a customer find vases for a wedding when something was wrong with their shipment, and I had to go find some other vases to make up the difference for them. It was like finding a needle in a haystack, but luckily they were found, and that lady really, really thoroughly appreciated it. Just last week at Crossmark, I served peaches even though I'm not a real big peach fan, but I did it anyway. The woman came back Monday, found me, and actually said I did a really good job, the peaches were so juicy she came back and bought some more. Nobody's ever approached me saying something like that before, and that just made me feel really good.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge would be my learning disability, dealing with that to get the task done. That's definitely the biggest hurdle. Other than that, it's just learning from my mistakes and just moving forward.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in my work and personal life are being trustworthy and cleanliness. These principles guide how I approach both my professional responsibilities and my personal relationships.
