About Sarah

Sarah Becker serves as a Coach at Walmart, a role equivalent to assistant manager, where she has worked for 13.5 years in the retail industry. In her current position of three and a half years, she supervises between 80 and 200 associates in a $132 million store, with primary responsibility for the fulfillment area while ensuring smooth operations across front end, asset protection, stocking, and receiving. Prior to Walmart, she worked in food service seeking more stability. She attended Tennessee Technological University for three and a half years studying mechanical engineering before dropping out due to personal circumstances. Sarah has been recognized through selection into the Maverick Program in Region 12 and has received Associate of the Month twice. She participates in the Children's Miracle Network through her store. She attributes her success to support from family members including her husband, brother, kids, and dad, as well as previous store managers. Sarah values integrity and timely follow-up in both her professional and personal life, and advises young women entering the field to be diligent, take criticism with a grain of salt, and keep pushing forward without quitting.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Sarah

01What do you attribute your success to?

Support in the right places from family and managers who encouraged me even during hardships, like my husband, brother, kids, dad, and previous store managers who I can still call for advice.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice is reflection. When you're looking too hard at something and can't find the answer, come back to it. Take a moment to pause, reflect on the big picture and the ripple effect, then keep going.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Be diligent and keep pushing. You can listen to criticism, take it with a grain of salt, discern in your own mind and keep pushing. Don't quit.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is the workload and lack of focus on teaching and developing people from corporate upper leadership, as they are very metric driven. The opportunity is growth, as recent restructure allows applying directly for store manager positions.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity and follow up. My integrity is 100% intact, and I will never do, say, or be anything other than what I intend to be. Follow up means addressing needs or questions by the end of the business day, applying the same to family and children.
