About Sarah

Sarah Buckius is an educator and artist whose work spans art education, digital media, interactive media, and performance. She began her academic path studying mechanical engineering, then industrial design, before discovering photography and digital media art, and she started studying art in 2004. Buckius teaches online classes at San Jose State University, where she plans lectures, grades assignments, and designs projects for college students. Her creative practice includes researching patents by women in technology from the late 1800s to early 1900s as inspiration for digital artworks, and she recently completed a project featuring a sculpture and two performances exhibited at the San Jose Museum of Art. She attributes her success to supportive women in her field, such as colleague Rhonda Holberton, and her work emphasizes inclusivity by amplifying diverse voices in technology and STEM. Buckius also volunteers by creating creativity clubs and murals at her children's school.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Sarah

01What do you attribute your success to?

I've had some women who supported me along the way. I'll mention Rhonda Holberton who works with me at San Jose State University. She has supported me in the role of teaching and also mentioned my work to the curator at the San Jose Museum of Art. Having people that support you who look at things in a diverse way and include women in that conversation is so important.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

You have to be so adaptable, you have to be so flexible to be in technology. The changing speed of technology changing can be hard to adapt. There is a power structure that is not inclusive. How do we actually make technology that helps everyone and the planet.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Inclusivity. My projects are all about how can we amplify diverse voices in technology and STEM. Always working to figure out ways to include diverse voices whether it's in the classroom or in my work.
