Her Interview
Ten minutes with Sarah
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to personal motivation. I am the only person in my family who pursued education beyond the bachelor's level, earning both a master's degree and a doctorate. I have always followed a different path from the rest of my family, both academically and professionally, and that motivation has encouraged me to continue pursuing opportunities for growth and advancement.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have received is to not react based on emotion. I have found that taking a moment to pause, consider the situation, and respond thoughtfully helps me communicate more effectively and navigate challenging professional situations.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering healthcare is to keep going and not give up. The field can be challenging, but perseverance is important. I encourage women to continue moving forward even when things become difficult. I also appreciate that my current hospital has a majority-female leadership team, which demonstrates the opportunities available for women to grow into leadership roles in healthcare.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the challenges in my field is continuing to have patience and understanding that I do not make every decision. There are times when I may not agree with a decision, but I have learned the importance of remaining patient and trusting the leadership around me. I also believe it is important to assume goodness in my coworkers and approach situations with the understanding that others are working toward positive outcomes.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me are faith, honesty, and communication. Respect naturally comes with those values and is an important part of how I interact with others. I strive to communicate honestly and respectfully while maintaining faith and integrity in both my professional and personal life.
