Her Story

About Sarah

Twenty-five years ago, when I got my degree in counseling psychology, I quickly realized that I didn't actually want to be a counselor. But I loved business, and I loved the study of human motivation and behavior, and I wanted to find a way to combine those two things. I had a college professor in the College of Business who said, 'Hey, I think what you're talking about is this field called organization development and adult learning and coaching. You can do this in a professional setting and support people to get fulfillment out of their careers and ultimately their lives.' It was like that light bulb moment - that's what I want to do. So I got my master's degree in organization development and I've been working in this field ever since. I had about 15 and a half years in corporate HR, and now 8 and a half years as a solopreneur. My work is so varied - I do leadership coaching one-on-one, talent development consulting for organizations, delivery and design of leadership programs, and speaking engagements. I love that no two days are the same. One-on-one leadership coaching is my favorite thing to do because it gives me an opportunity to support somebody one-on-one and create a safe space for them to achieve their full potential and inspire movement in their life. I also serve as adjunct faculty at Bowling Green State University, where I teach graduate programs in the College of Business. I always say I get to do this work, I don't have to do this work - I'm choosing it because I love it.

Ten minutes with Sarah

01What do you attribute your success to?

I will be the first person to say I did not do this on my own. I have had the most amazing mentors and role models that are also in the background cheering for me and also saying my name in rooms that I'm not in, which eventually potentially leads to opportunities down the road. I could not do the work that I do with the level of clientele that I have and be as successful as I am without those people. I had so many supporters and cheerleaders in my camp.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Definitely authenticity would be number one. I want to be myself and be the best version of myself wherever I am, but I also coach my clients that it's not about fitting the mold to be a leader or to get that job that you want, but it is about being your most authentic self, which also allows you to give permission for other people to be their most authentic self. Building relationships is also key - everything is a relationship-based business, and I value that connection between people. That's how we get work done, is through and with other people. Building those relationships before you actually need something will help you down the road. And I also think just lifelong learning - I'm a consummate learner and recognize that it's okay to not know everything, because that means that you have an opportunity to learn something new and fully be challenged.
