Her Story

About Sarah

I've been in the insurance and risk management field for about 12 years, currently serving as VP of Insurance and Risk Management at One Group, which is part of a community bank. My focus for the last 10 years has been working with healthcare verticals, non-profits, human services, charter schools, churches, and religious organizations. I work with middle market to large accounts, helping them with everything from property and casualty to employee benefits. What makes my approach unique is my background - I have my bachelor's degree in nursing from Robert Wesley University and worked as an emergency and trauma nurse for about 10 years before moving into insurance. That nursing experience taught me to be fast-paced and on-the-go, and I bring that same energy to my current role. It's not about what I want, it's mostly about what clients need help with and what they're looking to accomplish. A typical day involves servicing current clients and prospecting, taking clients out to lunch to see where they're struggling, sharing what we've seen similar organizations doing, benchmarking them, and finding ways to save them money. I do a lot of networking, attending events, and meeting CFOs, controllers, and business owners. Education is a big part of what I do - I educate clients on their businesses, whether personal or commercial, providing risk management reviews and giving them ideas on where they can save money. I speak different languages, so I'm able to help a diverse range of clients, not just with insurance but also with medical bills and other challenges. I've even tutored people in nursing classes, helping several of my clients successfully become nurses.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've received is to follow your instincts and do something that is dear to your heart. It's not just a job - you want to have heart and enjoy what you do. I think that's really important for me, and I've been following that. If I'm not comfortable in a place, I'm definitely going to find something else. People have told me you have to follow your instincts, and that's what I do.
