Sarah Simons is a cybersecurity professional with 7–8 years of experience, specializing in incident response and system engineering. Her journey into cybersecurity began during her military service as a human resource officer in a military intelligence brigade, where she worked alongside cybersecurity and intelligence officers around 2015. Following her medical retirement from the military in 2019, Sarah pursued her Master of Science in Cybersecurity from the University of Tampa, which she completed in May 2022. She holds key certifications including CompTIA Security+, Certified Ethical Hacker, and Splunk Core and Power User Certifications, reflecting her technical proficiency and dedication to safeguarding critical systems. Currently, Sarah serves as a System Engineer for the Military Sealift Command, where she creates, tests, and validates software applications prior to deployment on ships—an essential process where precision and compliance are critical. She is also the CEO & Founder of Signal Watch Security Consultants LLC, a cybersecurity and IT consulting firm she established last year, providing strategic guidance and technical solutions to clients across industries. Previously, at Booz Allen Hamilton, she supported NASA by creating a Strategic Threat Weekly Report delivered to over 200 personnel, helping the organization maintain a proactive cybersecurity posture and strengthen its operational security. Beyond her professional achievements, Sarah is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and Women in Cybersecurity, mentoring young women to explore careers in technology and cybersecurity. Her combination of military discipline, technical expertise, and entrepreneurial leadership allows her to approach complex cybersecurity challenges with precision, strategic vision, and a collaborative mindset. Don't steer away from STEM: it is challenging but rewarding. Persist through difficulty; the outcome is worth the effort.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Many employers require lengthy experience (e.g., 10+ years), which can exclude capable candidates; rapid technology change (including AI) is creating both challenges and opportunities.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Being a team player and someone colleagues can depend on; dependability and collaboration are essential.
