Her Story

About SarahClaire

Every day I work on my platform, doing a lot of appearances and going to different schools throughout Alabama, talking and working with different organizations to raise awareness and get the word out about eating disorders. I'm usually creating social media content or working with other professionals in the area, doing whatever I can through that. I also nanny, which I do in the afternoons after my classes. On top of all of this, I'm a full-time senior student at the University of South Alabama, getting my degree, and I also enjoy fitness and just being a college student as well, making sure that I'm having fun while I'm doing all these things. I wake up and usually first thing I do is go to the gym, then I make breakfast and pack up and get ready for my day. I'm always in class in the morning, and then usually in between tasks I'm studying and working on my social media content or whatever project I have going on. Then I go back to classes, usually make a lunch or grab something, and then I head to work to nanny. At night I'm eating and just doing regular life things, or I'm doing appearances and prepping for whatever work I'm doing throughout my nonprofit.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with SarahClaire

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think determination and ambition are what I attribute my success to. I'm doing this work because I love it and I'm passionate about it, not because I have to. The second that I start feeling I have to do all of this, it's not as special, but I'm doing it because I'm passionate about it, because I love it, and so that's why I continue to do it.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is to do something because you love it, and not because you have to. I think the second that I start feeling I have to do all of this, it's not as special, but I'm doing it because I'm passionate about it, because I love it, and so that's why I continue to do it. This advice has really shaped how I approach my work and keeps me motivated.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't ever change who you are for other people. Make sure you're staying true to who you are and what your values are. I think it's really important to stay true to who I am and not who people expect me to be. This is something I hold close in both my work and personal life, and I believe it's essential for anyone entering this field.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges I face is keeping my own mental health on track, even when I'm advocating for it all the time. I just have to make sure that I'm taking care of myself and not only taking care of others, but I feel like I've gotten into a really good balance of that. As for opportunities, I've had some really amazing things happen. I'm getting to go compete at Miss Alabama this summer, which is really amazing. I've had opportunities like meeting the governor, traveling to advocate, going into different schools and speaking about my story. I published a children's book last year, so that was really cool. These have all been really amazing opportunities.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Relationships and community are probably most important to me, along with just showing love to everyone around me and being true to myself. I think it's really important to stay true to who I am and not who people expect me to be. These values guide everything I do, both in my advocacy work and in my personal life.
