Ten minutes with Sarena
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to a strong commitment to self-belief and to consistently pursuing work that makes me proud. While that mindset didn’t always come naturally, I’ve learned to be intentional about building confidence through action. Setting goals, following through, and creating tangible results I can look back on and truly feel proud of myself.
Throughout my career, I’ve approached each opportunity with passion, purpose, and a desire to grow. For me, success isn’t just about outcomes, it’s about proving to myself, time and time again, that I am capable, resilient, and evolving. This journey has not only strengthened my professional skills but has also deepened my confidence in my decisions and abilities.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I ever received came from my mom, who told me to take things with a grain of salt. As you step into the apartment industry, having thick skin is essential. Interactions can sometimes be challenging, and emotions can run high. It’s a simple piece of advice, but it carries so much weight when you’re in the field navigating real situations.
You learn quickly that everyone is coming from their own perspective, and in those moments, you’re simply trying to work through the situation and do your best. The key is being sympathetic to what others are experiencing without allowing it to affect you entirely. That balance has helped me approach difficult interactions with residents and prospects with understanding, while also maintaining a sense of professionalism and composure.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The advice I would give to younger women is to not let expectations hold you back. When you walk into a room or begin something new, people may already have an idea of who you are or how they expect you to show up. I encourage you, especially as young women, to move beyond those assumptions and define yourself on your own terms.
It’s easy to feel pressure to fit into the boxes others create for us, but we are always capable of so much more. Set your own standard, trust your voice, and allow your actions to reflect who you truly are, not who others expect you to be. Don’t let outside expectations limit your potential or dictate how you approach your career.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in my field is balancing empathy with professional boundaries. I genuinely care about the residents and prospects I work with, and I take pride in creating positive experiences for them. Helping others is something that motivates me, and it’s a big part of why I enjoy what I do.
At times, this level of empathy can make it difficult when situations are beyond my control. I naturally want to resolve every issue and ensure everyone leaves feeling taken care of, but I’ve learned that not every outcome is within my ability to change. Over time, I’ve worked on approaching these moments with perspective, continuing to provide support and care, while also recognizing the importance of boundaries.
This has been an important area of growth for me, as it’s allowed me to maintain my passion for helping others while developing resilience and a more balanced approach to challenges in my role.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me in my work life are trustworthiness, honesty, and hard work. I value people I can rely on, those who are transparent in their work and willing to take accountability when mistakes happen. It’s especially admirable to see leaders acknowledge when they’re wrong and move forward with integrity, because it sets the tone for everyone else to do the same.
I look for teammates and mentors I can depend on, particularly in moments when I need guidance or a fresh perspective. Being surrounded by individuals who are dedicated, honest, and committed to doing the right thing makes a meaningful difference. It not only strengthens collaboration but also creates a positive and supportive workplace environment.
