Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to never losing sight of my goals despite being a teen parent who didn't have an easy life and went through many trials and tribulations. I was very persistent and goal-oriented about where I was going to be. When I became a paralegal, that was one checkmark. Then when I got tired of working for attorneys who undervalued and underappreciated paralegals, I decided I wanted to work for a judge because attorneys answer to judges. I worked at the county and sacrificed almost eight and a half years of my life, went back to school, and got my bachelor's degree. At that point in my early 30s, I knew I was meant for more - my whole goal was to work for the federal government. When that happened for me, that was my peak - I really made it and got to where I wanted to be. I've only been at the federal government for a year, but I've worked really hard, networked, and put myself out there. The fact that I got promoted within the year has been amazing, and all my hard work has finally paid off. I think my career alone speaks for itself. Most importantly, I give God all the glory for all my success. Because of Him, I am where I am today - He saved my life. I believe being in the legal field is God's calling, just like being a teacher or doctor. It's about advocating for people who don't know the law and need guidance. My calling was about how I can help people in a way that impacts their lives.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was that work will be there tomorrow, but life won't, so appreciate the time you have with the ones you love. But also, work should not feel like work, and work should feel like something you love to do. That's always stuck with me.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The most important values to me are serving others before serving yourself - that's what true leadership is. I believe in being an advocate for people who need help and guidance. I'm passionate about making an impact and making a difference in people's lives, especially those who find themselves in difficult situations like I once did. My faith is central to everything - I give God all the glory for my success because He saved my life. I'm a big advocate in church, serving in the kids' ministry and surrounding myself with people in that environment. Family is also incredibly important to me. I'm a mom, and even though my kids are older now, I focus on them because this is when they need the most guidance. I'm always talking to them about college, Roth IRAs, doing what they love, and setting them up for success, because when you don't have that kind of guidance, you never know where life can take you. I also believe in uplifting other women - we have to be proactive, lift one another, guide one another, and push each other to want more in life. When you truly know who you are and are secure, there's no need to compete. I want to see all my fellow women win because there's enough to go around.
