01What do you attribute your success to?
Patience and belief
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
To not try to be something I'm not, because it doesn't work out well if you're not yourself. If you're not in alignment with your strengths and interests, it won't work well and it'll wear you down.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Being an author is a calling and a passion, but it doesn't make a great paying job and can't easily support one's livelihood. Have a side gig that feeds you literally and creatively but doesn't stretch you in the exact same ways that writing can.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
There is very little money in editing and writing. Literary magazines and small presses are going under with fewer options for independent publishing. Biggest opportunity is that editorial boards want to uplift marginalized voices, creating opportunities for different voices to be heard, though it often involves volunteer or side gig roles.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I value intellectual stimulation and connection to the body and being outside. I need to be able to be outside when I need to, bring my work outside, and touch grass. I also focus on how my work can help other people, not just be about me.
