As a leader, Reyna emphasizes understanding the perspectives behind mistakes to foster better mentorship, and she encourages young women entering male-dominated fields like the military to confidently use their voices.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Sasha

01What do you attribute your success to?

Honestly, probably just growing up with a single mom, and I was three, and I just wanted to do something with my life and get out. I didn't live in a small town, I lived outside of Detroit. I just wanted to have something for myself and explore the world. So for me, it was really just about going after what I wanted.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

It's probably about leadership from a leadership perspective. It's important as a leader when people make mistakes to ask why, to get the story, be curious about what was going through their head, what was their thought process. So that you can understand their perspective and help correct that. People have grown up different ways, they've had different environments, and sometimes those patterns are hard to break, so understanding the why can help us be better leaders.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't be afraid to use your voice. Unfortunately it's a man's world still in most fields, military, even the companies I work with in home remodeling, it's predominantly males, and we're just as capable, they're just as smart, and don't be afraid to use your voice, speak up and just show them that you can do it too.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

In the military, a challenge is a lot of the administrative changes that have happened that feel like for a lot of people it's not as supportive. Sometimes the lack of control you have over your life because you're under a government contract. Opportunities are really just to learn and grow, travel is your best teacher, going to other states, getting to see different lifestyles, different ways of life, and that it's okay to do things differently, there's another perspective.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty is important to me. Effort. You don't have to be the best at everything, you just have to try. You have to put in the effort, you have to take the step.
