Her Story

About Savannah

Savannah Howerton is a land development, residential construction, project management, and real estate development professional with nine years of experience in the home building and land development industry. She currently serves as Senior Land Development Manager in Birmingham, Alabama. Her responsibilities vary by project stage and include leading team huddles, conducting site visits with engineers and contractors, preparing preliminary budgets, and overseeing the progression from raw land through development analysis, lot delivery, and city handoff for home construction. Savannah earned her master's degree through a program at her alma mater, Texas A&M, which led directly to hands-on internships and her entry into the industry as a land analyst. She advanced through promotions to her current senior role. She plans to re-engage with the Urban Land Institute and CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) following a recent move. Savannah attributes her success to her parents' emphasis on work ethic and supportive leaders in her first role. She advises young women entering the male-dominated field to find reliable mentors, maintain trusted sounding boards, and be prepared to advocate for themselves. She sees opportunities in integrating AI platforms to automate processes and challenges in collaborating with jurisdictions on high-density housing.

Ten minutes with Savannah

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my parents who instilled a strong work ethic, and having really great supportive leaders in my first role that defined me as an employee and teammate, setting me up to be a team player.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Find a reliable mentor and have people in your life that you trust to be a sounding board, and be ready to stand up for yourself. The field is male-dominated so this support is important.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Opportunities include integrating AI platforms into day-to-day activities to automate processes and reduce workload. Challenges involve working with different cities and jurisdictions on push back to high-density housing, though this can also be an opportunity to find collaborative solutions.
