Her Interview

Ten minutes with Schekesia

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success primarily to my faith, which has provided me with guidance, resilience, and perspective throughout my journey. In addition, perseverance and a willingness to embrace opportunities that challenge me outside my comfort zone have been essential to my growth. I have consistently taken initiative to build my own path and invested in myself, often betting on my own abilities even when the outcome was uncertain.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to never wait for permission to lead. A mentor once encouraged me not to look for a handbook or wait for a clearly defined path, but instead to trust my judgment, step forward with confidence, and lead through action. That guidance has stayed with me and continues to shape how I approach opportunities and challenges in my career.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering my industry is to never wait for permission to lead. Invest in your education, actively seek out mentors, and focus on building strong, meaningful professional relationships. Be willing to take on challenges that stretch your skills and push you beyond your comfort zone, as that is where real growth happens. Most importantly, remember that your voice deserves to be heard in every room where decisions are being made, and your perspective is both valuable and necessary.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges and opportunities in my field right now include ongoing staffing shortages and the integration of AI into operations, along with the necessary governance, liability, and risk considerations that come with it. At the same time, we are preparing for a rapidly growing aging population, which will significantly increase demand for senior living services. This creates both urgency and opportunity to strengthen the workforce, elevate the field as a desirable specialty, and ensure we have the professionals needed to deliver high-quality care.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are faith, perseverance, and a willingness to embrace opportunities that push me outside of my comfort zone. I believe that every challenge presents an opportunity for growth and a chance to make a meaningful impact, both personally and professionally.
