About Selam
Selam Mebrahtu is a Medical Laboratory Technologist at Labcorp, where she works in the Consumer Genomics department. In her current role, she processes high-volume customer DNA samples using automated Tecan liquid-handling robotics and contributes to AI-driven genomic testing. Her work serves as a bridge between laboratory operations and bioinformatics, building on her experience in microbiology, patient specimen processing, and genomic analysis.
Selam holds a Master of Science in Health Data Informatics and Analytics from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, as well as a Master of Science in Botany/Plant Biology from the Eritrea Institute of Technology. She completed her health data informatics program while raising her young family, demonstrating strong determination, time management, and commitment to professional growth. Her career philosophy is centered on continuous development, and she encourages others not to overlook entry-level opportunities, which can provide a valuable pathway into growing organizations and create opportunities for advancement.
Beyond her professional career, Selam is a mother of three and actively involved in children’s ministry, where she prepares programs, lessons, and studies designed to support the next generation. She is motivated by a desire to keep learning, embrace new opportunities, and continually challenge herself to move beyond her current capabilities. With the support of her family, Selam hopes to advance into a senior bioinformatics specialist role, where she can use artificial intelligence and modern data-analysis methods to study patient health data and contribute to the future of healthcare.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I don't want to stay in one steady position. Whatever I get chance and opportunity, I want to use that one. My family, of course, they're helping me a lot for reaching my goals too.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Do not look down on the entry-level positions. Sometimes they are a good and easiest way to step our foot in the growing organization. From there, we can grow up fast and easily.
