Her Story
About Selena
I've been in insurance for almost 6 years now. My main area of expertise is personal and commercial lines insurance, including DNO (Directors and Officers Liability), Employment Practices Liability, Fiduciary, crime, and miscellaneous professional - that's my niche market right now. At Nexus, I was trained to underwrite all of those lines, and then the combination of miscellaneous professional, which is my niche market now, kind of made my role unique. I really like to build relationships - that's what our industry is about. I really like talking to people and engaging with people, having conversations, building rapport, and in insurance I get to do that all the time. On the side of all of that I do on a daily basis, I got certified to be a personal trainer, so I have 10 clients that I train on a weekly basis. I've been doing that for almost 3 years. I really like the path of both - it keeps me busy, but I also have a lot of flexibility to live my life. I like to work hard, I really like to build relationships, and I enjoy walking in people's journeys with them. That is so near and dear to my heart.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I like to learn new things. I like to master them. I like to be efficient. And I'm always looking for the next challenge. I think knowing my goals and having a plan for them - I know exactly what the execution looks like, so I just move in that direction, and it's like, alright, we know what we have to do. Let's do this. And have fun along the way! I really like to work hard, I really like to build relationships - that's what our industry is about. I really like talking to people and engaging with people, and having conversations, building rapport. In insurance I get to do that all the time, and with personal training it's the same way. People are coming for you to make their lives better, and it's fun to do. You enjoy it, and you get to walk in their journey with them. That is so near and dear to my heart.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Go in with an open mind, and don't be afraid to ask questions. The people that hired you, they believe in you, and they see something in you, so when you go in there, you lean on them as your mentors, you ask questions, you ask for coaching. That's how you get better faster and more efficiently. And I think it's important if you're coaching someone to make sure they feel heard. There's a give and take.
