Her Story
About Selina
I've been working in healthcare since 2015, and my path has been driven by wanting to learn something new and pursue better opportunities. I initially wanted to own my own daycare, so I got my certificate for early childhood at Lively. But after having kids, that path brought me to the state, and I wanted to get out of that field. That's when I started renewing medical doctors for the state of Florida. I also licensed hospice hospitals, homemaker and companion services, and home medical equipment. In my current role at AHCA, I do data collection for surgery centers, hospitals, and other facilities. My responsibilities include looking at coding and making sure everything is okay before I approve it. They have to send their records to me, and I make sure everything is correct. I earned my contract manager certificate, which was a significant achievement for me. What I love about my work is being able to provide information to people who need it. I get a lot of people asking where to go if they need to find out about nursing homes or other healthcare services, and because I work here, I can give that information. My heart has always been in healthcare, even though I knew I couldn't be a nurse because I can't handle blood. But I wanted to get into something where I could help people and provide them with the information they need.

Ten minutes with Selina
01What do you attribute your success to?
I don't want to sound cocky, but it's just me wanting to learn more. God led me here, you know? I'm so driven and I always want to keep learning and growing. That desire to learn more and understand new things is really what has pushed me forward in my career.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
I had someone tell me to please don't lose what I have, meaning I'm so driven, I'm very positive, I try not to let anything get to me. You know, we only have 8 hours of the day, and we're just gonna do it to the fullest, and next day, start fresh, so never lose that positive attitude. That really stuck with me because it's about maintaining that drive and positivity no matter what challenges come your way.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Know where you want to go and make sure you reach it. You can do anything you want to do, but like I said, if you don't have a goal, you're just at a standstill, and you won't know where to go. It's so important to set goals for yourself because that's how you know you're accomplishing something. Without goals, you don't have direction, and you need that direction to move forward in your career.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
For me, the biggest challenge is that I'm so driven that I want it all. And then, you know, you can't have it all. So it's like, you have to be patient. That's a challenge, being patient. It will come. When you're someone who feels like what you're doing is not enough and you can always do more, you have to learn to be patient and trust that if you keep reaching for what you're going for, it will come.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
For work, what's important to me is understanding what you're doing and making sure that your environment is one where if you don't understand, you can get some clarification. You know, just feel comfortable. Personally, it's about being true to yourself and having a better understanding of what you really want to do. You have to focus on what you really want to do, because if you don't set a goal or something, you won't accomplish anything. For me, I always have to have a goal or something that I'm trying to reach so that I know I'm accomplishing something.
