Ten minutes with Serene

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to being resilient and having a lot of life experiences that shaped me to be a driven force for great intentions to help people from all walks of life. I've always had to prove myself more - to get a higher education, to fight an illness, to put myself through school, to make something of my career when no one else would believe in me. One of the backbones that make me who I am today is having wonderful people come into my life as mentors to remind me of being strong enough and to keep believing in myself. I've always had a beat-to-my-own-drum personality and have always been optimistic but practical. I've had a lot of adversity in my life growing up, and from that I've always had to prove myself. I had wonderful mentors throughout my different careers who influenced me in different areas, and I think having a little bit of faith in myself and believing in myself has been key. It may take a certain journey to get to where you need to be, but I've always been open to stepping out of my comfort zone and having greater change.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I always tell people to have a transitional plan. Don't leave your day job until you're ready to transition - build your network and build your framework of what you want to do as an entrepreneur or whatever that may be, and transition into that as you build it incrementally. That's kind of what I did. I was probably transitional for the last couple years from 2017 to 2020 because I was still working but also doing my passion work part-time. I think it's good to have that framework as you try to build your way up, when you have your clientele, when you try to have the right money source to back you up, before you kind of take that leap of faith. To me, it was incremental. So I would tell people to have the framework, the transitional plan, and also the drive, the passion, and the tenacity to go forward with what you believe in, because it is your drive and your passion and tenacity that's going to be the driven force of what you're going to be doing with your plan as you build things and it evolves organically in a very empowering way.
