Her Interview
Ten minutes with Serenity
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to multiple people assisting me, perseverance, and being able to ride through the tougher times. Understanding that not everybody's going to be a mega superstar, but what you bring is also important. If you're doing what you love, then just keep doing it.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice I received was to make it my own. Be authentic in what you're doing. Don't try to be someone that you've seen that you admire. Be you, and maybe incorporate tiny particles of something that you admire into you. You are unique and original, and that's your masterpiece.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Know what you do well, identify your best genre and where you want to go. Have a roadmap. Persevere, make contacts, and build community relationships. Go out and be a part of the music scene in the cities you're able to get into and make connections.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Everything is digitized, which makes people less likely to purchase works but you are still being heard. Live music is competitive, so play the rooms that you can play. Music requires a lot of work and practice to perfect your gift, like athletic training.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Finding a balance because family is superiorly important. It keeps you grounded and stable. Never go in unprepared. Always find time to balance and juggle your family and your professional endeavors. You have to feel good on all levels in order to bring your best self to your performance.
