Her Story

About Serra

Serra Vonderhorst is a car flow and vehicle operations manager covering two regions at Genesis, a role she has held for the last few months following a reorganization. With 24 years in the automotive OEM industry, she began her career right out of college in an entry-level position in a small rural district with Hyundai, where she proved herself and advanced to District Sales Manager. Over her first 20 years, she grew through many different markets and districts while successfully balancing her career with raising children. She later switched to Genesis, taking on a regional distribution manager role that evolved into her current position. Serra has pursued continuing education through leadership courses at Cornell and the American Management Association to support her professional growth. She attributes her success to her drive and grit, using challenges as motivation, and emphasizes the importance of honesty and openness in her work. In her industry, she notes the challenges and opportunities around evolving powertrain platforms, requiring nimbleness as trends shift between electric vehicles and hybrids. Her advice to young women entering the field is to stay grounded and know their worth, while she personally values the perspective that there will always be more tomorrow to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Serra

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would say that my drive and my grit. So I don't let it stop me when things are challenging. I like to use a challenge as motivation to get past it.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

There will always be more tomorrow. So not to get overwhelmed or inundated in everything coming at you in any given day, because there will always be more tomorrow.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Stay grounded. Know your worth. And basically just stay grounded and know your worth.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The future of automotive involves many different powertrain platforms right now. Everybody's sort of gambling on whether we're all EV or now the trend is turning more hybrid, so finding the path and being nimble enough in order to change directions when that path changes.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty and openness are very important traits for me to exhibit as well as for me to be able to perceive those traits in those that I'm working with. Because anything you can work through problems as long as you know that they exist.
