Shabnam Pirestani

Shabnam Pirestani is a driven and passionate Ph.D. candidate in Molecular, Cellular Biology, and Genetics at Drexel University College of Medicine. Currently conducting her research at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Dr. Erica Golemis’s lab, Shabnam focuses on understanding the role of the VHL gene in kidney cancer. She previously earned her Master’s in Oncology and Cancer Biology at Drexel under the mentorship of Dr. Erica Golemis, where her thesis explored how Aurora A Kinase (AURKA) and WEE1 regulate PD-L1 expression in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma. Her work has given her extensive hands-on experience with cutting-edge techniques including cell culture, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, organoid modeling, and siRNA transfection.

Beyond her academic research, Shabnam has gained valuable clinical laboratory experience through internships in pathology labs, where she worked on assays such as ELISA, HLA typing, and DNA/RNA extraction. She has also contributed to the scientific community by translating the Cancer Genetics and Therapeutics book at the University of Isfahan. With a deep interest in human genetics, gene therapy, molecular diagnostics, and immunogenetics, Shabnam is committed to contributing meaningful advancements to cancer research and personalized medicine. Her work reflects a unique blend of scientific curiosity, technical skill, and a strong desire to make a difference in human health.

What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my unwavering faith in God, whose guidance has helped me navigate every challenge and embrace every opportunity. I am also deeply grateful to my parents and family, whose constant support, motivation, and encouragement have been a source of strength throughout my journey. Receiving the Best Thesis award was not only a personal milestone but a reflection of that faith and support. Every step of the way, I’ve been driven by my concern for the well-being of others, and with God’s help, I aim to make a meaningful impact in the field of cancer research. As an Iranian woman, I hope to inspire others especially women to recognize their inner strength and believe that with courage and determination, they can achieve anything they dream of.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is that if you have a clear heart, a sincere mind, and a genuine intention to help others, God will guide you toward your purpose. With strong faith, you’ll find that the right people and opportunities will enter your life to support and elevate you toward your goals.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is to stay open-minded, be adaptable, and embrace learning from diverse cultures and environments. Focus on building genuine, lasting connections these relationships can open doors and shape your journey in powerful ways. I want to remind every young woman: never let anyone or anything limit your dreams or your voice. You have the strength to become whoever you aspire to be just keep going, and never give up.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field is ensuring that experimental compounds show strong, consistent results in cell models, which is essential for developing effective therapies for kidney cancer. If successful, this work could lead to new treatment options for patients.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values I hold most dear are lifelong learning and striving for growth in every stage of life both professionally and personally. During my immigration journey, I was fortunate to receive support from generous people, especially my PI. Their kindness shaped my path, and now I’m committed to giving back by helping others with potential who just need the right support to succeed
