Shahrazad A. Haughton is an accomplished attorney and current Acting Director of Litigation in the Office of Legal Counsel at Baltimore City Public Schools. With a Juris Doctor from the University of Baltimore School of Law and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Towson University, she has built a career focused on education law, litigation, and public service. Her work emphasizes protecting the interests of students, staff, and the school system while navigating complex legal and administrative challenges.

Shahrazad began her legal career as an Assistant State’s Attorney for Baltimore City, where she prosecuted criminal offenses and honed her skills in trial preparation and legal research. She later served as Assistant Counsel and Associate Counsel at Baltimore City Public Schools before advancing to Senior Counsel and now Acting Director of Litigation. She also gained valuable experience as an Assistant County Attorney for Baltimore County, handling defensive litigation and labor and employment matters.

Beyond her professional achievements, Shahrazad is actively involved in supporting the legal community through organizations like the American Constitution Society and the Alliance of Black Women Attorneys. Known for her dedication, integrity, and commitment to public service, she continues to mentor aspiring attorneys while shaping policies and guiding litigation strategies that impact the Baltimore City school system.

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to gaining diverse legal experience—from serving as a prosecutor to handling contracts, policy, litigation, and labor matters in the school system—while building strong relationships with leaders and making meaningful contributions, like implementing the state-wide search and seizure policy.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received comes from the incredible mentors in my life—my husband, Judge Nicole Barmore, Noel Newman, Judge Dana Middleton, Val Dericks, and my current Chief, Joshua Simmons—who have guided, supported, and challenged me to rise to every opportunity and grow both professionally and personally.

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would advise young women entering my industry to focus on connecting with people and building strong relationships, because networking is key to creating opportunities—so put yourself out there and take every chance that comes your way.

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in my work and personal life are family, quality time with my husband and son, supporting their passions, and sharing my love of travel to create lasting memories together.
