Her Story
About Shahreen
With over 25 years in the photonics industry, I bring together my electrical engineering background with a passion for technical sales and customer relationships. After earning my bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, I started at Kimberly and Clark as an electrical engineer, but quickly discovered that designing circuits and working alone at a desk wasn't for me. I love people interaction, which led me to technical sales. I joined my current company as a technical sales engineer and have grown through various positions, all centered around sales. My expertise lies in connecting high-end photonics products like lasers, motion control systems, and light sources to cutting-edge applications across diverse markets, from quantum engineering to AI research. A typical day involves managing current customer projects, handling pre and post-sales issues, and acting as a liaison between engineering and customers. I've led teams of technical sales engineers and inside sales teams, developed sales strategies that increased company revenue, and was instrumental in blueprinting our current CRM system. What keeps me engaged after all these years is the constant learning process as new markets and applications emerge. Beyond managing projects, I'm passionate about mentoring people and helping them grow in their careers. I've hired many people within the company who are still there today, thriving in their own ways.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received is to know what you don't know. Be aware of what you don't know and don't be afraid to ask questions. This mindset has helped me throughout my career, especially as I've navigated different markets and applications in the constantly evolving photonics industry. Being willing to acknowledge gaps in your knowledge and actively seek answers has been fundamental to my growth and success.
02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
What's most important to me is working with people and helping them grow. I love interacting with people and learning about the research they're doing. A significant part of my career has been spent managing and mentoring people, and seeing their career growth brings me tremendous satisfaction. I've been involved with hiring many people within the company who are still there today, growing in their own ways. This focus on people interaction is actually what drew me away from solo engineering work and into technical sales, and it continues to be what drives me professionally.
