Her Story
About Shaira
I've been working in staffing and recruiting for about 6 years now. I started my career back in 2017 when I was still a college student in the Philippines. My family was facing financial problems and my parents couldn't send me to school anymore, but I had two more years of college left and I didn't want to stop. So I started working as a virtual assistant for an IT company based in Chicago. During the day I was a full-time college student, and at night I was a full-time employee. I had zero knowledge and zero background in recruitment when I started, but after a couple of months they promoted me to recruitment coordinator, and that's where my journey in the recruitment field really began. Since I started my career with an IT company, I liked recruiting people and interviewing people on the technical side, so I stayed in that field. My experience has been a mix of both agency and in-house recruiting, and both technical and non-technical roles, but it's predominantly within the technical side, like IT and software engineering. In five years, I see myself starting my own agency. I really like helping clients out and filling really hard-to-fill roles, so I kind of see myself doing the same thing with a mix of being a consultant and a business owner.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to a combination of grit and perseverance.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Do not be afraid to ask questions no matter how silly you think they are. This is by far the smartest career advice ever. We always wonder “what if” or we keep that small itch of “am I doing it right?” or “but what does that actually mean?” Being able to push away these questions and doubts is a skill we need to learn to help us get to where we want to be. I often find myself with a little regret in the back of my head after each meeting “I wish I had asked the question.” or “I wish I had clarified that earlier”. And we don't want to find ourselves in this situation, right? So ask the question.
