Her Interview

Ten minutes with Shakia

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success first and foremost to the Creator, and I am also deeply motivated by my son. Becoming a parent at a young age gave me a strong sense of responsibility and a determination to provide for him and lead by example. Throughout periods of significant personal and physical hardship, I refused to give up because I knew I had someone depending on me.

My journey has taught me persistence and resilience. I learned to use my skills and talents to create opportunities for myself, beginning with creative work and poetry and eventually developing my own form of Movemental Poetry. That experience showed me that perseverance, creativity, and the willingness to keep moving forward can open doors.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I received came when I was beginning my career in the music industry. I told my supervisor that I wanted to be “in the industry,” and he reminded me that I was already there because I was working on a real industry project. He helped me understand that the industry is much larger than any one person and that I should not become preoccupied with knowing everyone or proving that I belonged.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Peace, reflection, kindness, personal growth, and helping others are important to me. I value maintaining a sense of peace through practices such as meditation, spending time in nature, gardening, visiting parks and waterways, and appreciating animals and the natural environment.

I also value service and community involvement. Throughout my life, I have looked for ways to educate, encourage, support, and help others, whether through community workshops, advocacy, education, creative work, or preservation initiatives. These experiences have reinforced my belief in giving back and using my abilities to create something positive for others.
