Ten minutes with Shakima

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to faith, perseverance, and never allowing difficult circumstances to define what I can achieve. Every challenge I have faced has taught me something about strength, leadership, and the importance of continuing to move forward. I also credit my family and the values instilled in me, especially the influence of my mother, who continues to inspire me. Most importantly, I believe success is not only about what I accomplish, but also about how I encourage others, create opportunities, and make a positive difference along the way.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to never become so comfortable that I stop growing. Every position may not be the final destination, but each one can teach you something that prepares you for the next opportunity. I’ve learned to keep investing in myself, continue my education, remain open to change, and never allow a setback to make me question my purpose. Sometimes the path may change, but that does not mean the goal has changed.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering healthcare is to know your worth, never stop learning, and don’t be afraid to use your voice. Leadership does not require you to know everything—it requires you to be willing to learn, make difficult decisions, and stand confidently in what you bring to the table. Find mentors, invest in your education, and never allow rejection or setbacks to convince you that you are not capable. Most importantly, stay true to your values and remember that there is room for you at the table—and sometimes, you may be the one who creates the table for others.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in healthcare today is the rising cost of care. Patients are facing higher expenses while healthcare organizations are also managing increased staffing, technology, and operational costs. This creates an opportunity for healthcare leaders to find more efficient ways to provide quality care without losing sight of the patient experience. I believe strong leadership, improved access, and smarter use of resources will be essential as healthcare continues to evolve.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are integrity, compassion, faith, respect, and perseverance. In my work, I believe in treating people fairly, leading by example, and doing what is right even when it is not always easy. In my personal life, my faith and family keep me grounded and remind me of what truly matters. I try to lead with compassion, remain true to who I am, and leave a positive impact on the people I encounter.
