Her Story

About Shamaiah

My career journey has been incredibly diverse, taking me through retail, childcare, banking, and working for the state of South Carolina before moving to Charlotte. In Charlotte, I've worked in various capacities including Instacart, as a UPS driver helper, at the airport for airlines, in call centers, and at a law firm. My most notable professional achievement was working at a law firm through Epic starting in 2021. I began as a service specialist/receptionist, handling reception, office services, mail services, setting up conference rooms, maintaining the cafe, placing catering orders, and making copies. After a year, I was promoted to supervisor at a different law firm, which was the peak of my career. During that time, I got to help an attorney write an article by proofreading, something I've always enjoyed since helping people write papers in school. I also worked under one of their top-paying attorneys in the Charlotte building, and we received bonuses. It was my dream job to be a lawyer, though I initially thought it was just criminal law, so I went into business administration and management instead. Currently, I work in customer service for 1-800-CONTACTS, where I've been since February, helping customers with orders and resolving issues. I previously worked in their warehouse doing inventory. I'm also a business owner and a recording artist/singer. My main expertise is customer service, as every role I've had involves working with customers.

Ten minutes with Shamaiah

01What do you attribute your success to?

First and foremost, I attribute my success to God, because without Him, none of this would be possible. Beyond that, I would say my belief system, my family, and how I was raised have been fundamental to who I am. And of course, my kids are a huge driving force for me. I go hard for my kids, for real. They keep me motivated and pushing forward no matter what challenges I face.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say just keep going. Don't let nothing deter you or stop you from your dreams and your goals. That Michael Jackson movie was kind of a reminder of that for me. His dad was trying to push him one way, but he knew he had greater inside of him, so he eventually branched off to be a solo artist. That just reminded me to keep going. Things may not be where I want them to be now, but if I keep going, I'll reach my potential. There's light on the other side of the tunnel.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are honesty and integrity. I believe in always acting with integrity and being honest in everything I do. I also value kindness and equality. I'd rather see equality for everybody than favoritism. I really don't like favoritism at all.
