Her Interview
Ten minutes with Shameka
01What do you attribute your success to?
My work ethic. I just believe in hard work, and I believe if you're gonna do a job, do it to the best of your ability. Go above and beyond. Don't just do the minimum. I attribute that back to my mother, and just what she instilled in me.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Make good financial decisions throughout your career. Also make sure you take care of your mental health, because if you can't be your best self, then you can't take care of others.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Research the profession and ensure that it's something that she really wants to do. Policing can be taxing on a person. You have to have a strong mental health, something that you do for yourself. If she feels that she has service in her heart to go ahead and go for it.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Challenge: Retaining officers, the workplace is toxic so good people want to leave. Opportunity: Growth - don't stay stagnant, go into different areas like school resource officer, investigations, detective, canine, federal level.
