Her Story
About Shanel
I started my retail journey in 2001 with the Limited brand, specifically Limited 2, while I was still in high school. That first experience built a strong foundation for what customer service should look like. I was so grateful for that opportunity because we made it fun for the little girls who came in, whether they were shopping or not. I became an assistant manager while I was a senior in high school, and I think those two things together - the customer experience and seeing how I was able to impact our team - got me hungry for that growth in them and to see them develop and grow. I've been a store manager since 2012, beginning my store manager career with Francesca's in Corpus Christi, which led me to Houston, Texas, where I currently am now with Kendra Scott. I've been in my current company since 2021, so this year will be my fifth year. If I had to choose just one area of expertise, it would be impacting people, whether it's people on my team, or within my district, or customers that I come across every day. A typical day for me involves what we call wow service at Kendra Scott - really just creating an experience for our customers and developing, coaching, and training the team to give that unreasonable hospitality as well. The biggest thing is investing the time with the team. I measure my success by what my leaders go on to do, and I'm most proud that I have promoted six assistant managers to store managers under my leadership.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I think advice would be to never lose sight of the reason why you want to be a leader, and the reason why you are a leader. We can get so caught up with all of the operational things that come with retail, and with being a store manager in retail, but the most important two things are the customers and our teams, and the impact that we can have as leaders can be both negative and positive. So just never lose sight of why you're a leader and how you can invest time, and make the time, to help your people grow, and to create just a magical experience with your customers.
