Her Story

About Shanika

I've been building myself up and making myself stronger on my own, doing something that my kids can see and look back on. Even though I've been through a lot of struggles, I still have the drive and love and care to do what I need to do. My cleaning business means everything to me because I love to clean, I love to meet new people, and I love to interact with my clients. It's something I'm into and something I love doing. What inspired me to start the cleaning business was my sister, who got killed 5 years ago when she was young. I have her daughter staying with me now - she was only one when her mom passed away. I wanted to do something not just for me, but for the family, something to keep her name alive. I've also worked as a caregiver and just started at Amazon in April, where I put boxes and orders inside bins for shipping. I love to always help people, talk to them, and give them advice. It doesn't matter what day or time it is - everyone needs somebody. Some people can't even talk to their family and friends, but they're better talking to an outsider than someone close.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

For a young lady, I will give her the encouragement. I will tell her, if that's what you want to do, you know, go ahead with your first mind. I'll give her steps, the best steps that I learned for myself, just to get into the cleaning business without people telling you to go under their name or it's better for this - start something under your name fresh. I'd show her different tips and things that I had learned, how to start the business, what would you need, how to apply for your cards, and keep yourself on a positive level. I'd help her do flyers, show her good places and areas, especially like elderly apartments and places like that that need help. Show her how to set up an account with her business. Also show her the best cleaning supplies and what stuff she can order, because some people may tell you this website is good, but it's best to see what your client likes, get to know what things they're allergic to, what smells they like and don't like.
