Her Interview
Ten minutes with Shannel
01What do you attribute your success to?
Definitely my family. Life wasn't always dealt the perfect hand of cards, but I learned how to navigate. I have resilience. My ability to adapt. I have a family of entrepreneurs. My grandfather was a cobbler with a strong work ethic. My dad has a very strong work ethic. My mom always saw the beauty in things and the human side with people. My church community, giving back, stewardship, and volunteerism.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
I surround myself with mentors. You need various mentors for different things. I've sought out coaches. Building relationships with people is most important because you want someone to be able to tell your story in rooms that you're not always in.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't be afraid. Be a trailblazer. A lot of what got me to where I am was taking on stretch projects. I didn't always say no. As women, we also have to learn how to support each other. We have to create more spaces where we can learn from each other's stories. Being bold. Same way men apply for applications they may not be qualified for, we need to do the same.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Technology is very fast and moving. Getting folks to buy in to change can be difficult. People need to understand how technology can help improve what they do. Some people want to work between their said hours and then they're done, but work has evolved beyond those hours. Not everyone is upskilling or reading trade magazines.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I like to strive for excellence. We shouldn't settle, but being okay with not being perfect. I enjoy going to church service. I enjoy spending time with my mom, my daughter. I'm learning as I get older to value time over things. It's okay to apologize. It takes a village to raise children.
